It all started in the city of Salvador, BA. That was the backdrop for the birth of a champion. His father Prof. Ciro was his first teacher; Edson Carvalho was practically born inside the world of Martial Arts and thus the seed of a champion was planted.
He lived downstairs in the building the housed the Itapagipano Judo Club, managed by Prof. Ciro and under supervision of Sensei Kazuo Yoshida, Edson started training at 4 years of age. At age 14 he had already developed his own technique and honed his knowledge to the point of becoming assistant teacher and instructor. He hasn't stopped ever since.
Edson Carvalho absorbed the essential knowledge from great names such as Sensei Hugo Ricardo, Yamamoto, Shigueto Yamazaki (father), Mitiharo Sogabe (Ono), Matsuda and the celebrated Ysao Okano.
After winning several titles in his home state, Edson Carvalho went to Rio de Janeiro in 1989, there he met the famous Prof. Mehdi, with whom the perfected his technique, didactics and knowledge.
While living in Rio, Edson Carvalho competed for the Flamengo Club as well as the Carlson Gracie club in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu championships.
He has an offensive style of fighting that blends techniques of projection, with emphasis on ground fights. Edson Carvalho is a formidable challenge to his opponents in any circumstance. His accomplishments are results of his classical training and carry the victory of unforgettable fights.
Edson Carvalho traveled to most countries, competing, teaching and training in countless international Dojos. The quality of his technique and his great knowledge are sought after and admired by many competitors and athletes in the Martial Arts world.
Nowadays, Edson Carvalho continues to actively train, compete, and teach, in addition to being a teacher and trainer for several Law Enforcement agencies. He works with male and female police officers, SWAT teams and members of the Armed Forces.

Sensei Mario Lemos began practicing Jiu-jitsu in 1986 at Gracie Umaita in Rio De Janeiro Brazil with Helio, Rickson, and Royler Gracie. He moved to the USA to begin an official teaching position with the Gracie academy in California. Then in 2001 at the rank of Brown belt he began training in Judo and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu with Sensei Edson Carvalho as his instructor. He also began working as an Instructor at Sensei Carvalho's academy. He received his Black Belt in 2002 from Edson Carvalho and has continued training and teaching with Sensei Carvalho since.

Tony Vincent began his martial arts journey over 20 years ago. Achieving a black belt in Japanese Jiu Jitsu and a Brown Belt in Judo along with years of study in Muay Thai, Kali/Escrima and Jeet Kune Do. In that time he has trained Law Enforcement on a local and federal platform and held numerous clinics for Weapons Retention, Rape Prevention and Weapon Disarms.
In 2000 he began training with Sensei Edson Carvalho as a white belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and received his BJJ Black Belt after 8 years of training in August of 2008

| Dominic Tafuri began training Brazilian Jui Jitsu in 2002 under Sensei Edson Carvalho. In 2004 he received his blue belt. In 2006 Dominic decided to try out Mixed Martial Arts and had his first professional fight in Atlantic City New Jersey. Dominic won his first bout in just thirty eight seconds by guillotine choke; it was after that fight on that night that Dominic received his purple belt from Sensei Edson Carvalho. Dominic took a little over a year off and then got back into fighting winning two more bouts also by submission. In 2008 Dominic received his brown belt. Mark Ramos started training with Sensei Edson Carvalho in May of 2006 starting with 3 sessions per week. Upon entering his first competition, Grapplers Quest in October 2006, Mark left the two-day tournament 9-0 with three gold medals at Novice NoGi, White Belt at weight and White Belt Absolute. In December of 2006, he was awarded his Blue Belt from Sensei Carvalho.
In 2007, Mark began to aid Sensei Carvalho as an assistant instructor with the kids program 3 times per week while increasing his own training to 5 days per week. The year was spent in 11 competitions resulting in 10 gold medals at the blue belt division and miscellaneous no-gi divisions. He also won his first judo tournament at the rank of Green Belt. The last tournament of the year was the No-Gi World Championships which he received 2nd place in the Blue Belt Division. The year culminated with his first trip to Brazil to enhance his training and he was awarded his purple belt in December of 2007.
In 2008, Mark has continued to play a helpful role in assisting Sensei Carvalho with evolving the kids program. The year also started with a 2nd place finish at the Pan-American Championship as his first tournament at Purple Belt. In the Purple Belt division, he has won the Grapplers Quest tournament at his weight and placed 4th in the Absolute division (open weight) as well as winning the Diamond State Games as a purple belt and in the Advanced Division for No-Gi. 2008 winded down with another second place finish in the No-Gi World Championships at the purple belt division and a second trip to Brazil.
While continually fighting in BJJ, Mark has won 5 tournaments at the rank of Green Belt in judo and has followed the teachings of his instructor to balance his training. Mark continues to show enthusiasm towards helping Sensei Carvalho with the kids program while advancing his own talent.

Pedro Loffredi started Judo at the age of 15 at his hometown of Rio de Janeiro / Brasil , achieving his black belt in May 1999 under Sensei George Mehdi (the first non Japanese authorized to teach Judo in Japan) and currently is a second degree black belt. As an athlete he had the privilege to practice extensively with many world class fighters like Mauricio Sabattini, Fabio Gurgel, Rolker Gracie, Jose Mario Sperry, Joao Sperry, Kakati, Flavio Canto, Carlos Honorato, Dr Jaber and Marcos Ruas and also invited to practice with the Brazilian National Judo Team (Projeto Futuro) during 2001-2002. Believes that from Judo and BJJ the most important lessons to learn are respect, discipline, perseverance and loyalty. That a good day at the tatame is a day in which nobody gets injured and that you go home with something new learnt. Also that a fighter shouldn't have a preference for stand up fighting or grappling for if you only know one you only know half the sport. Outside the tatame Pedro works as investment banker trading fixed income, currencies and swaps being graduated in economics and environmental science, holding a masters degree in finance. During his free time he enjoys staying with his family, friends, Flamengo, the ocean and enjoying a simple lifestyle.
In 2004, after a long search to find the best grappling arts opportunity for his two young sons, Todd discovered Sensei Edson Carvalho. He felt that the unique combination of Judo and BJJ along with Sensei Carvalho's unmatched teaching abilities would be an unparalleled path for his children to follow. Within a month of signing up his sons, Todd ended a two decades long sabbatical from the mat, and joined them as a member of Team Carvalho. Todd received his purple belt from Sensei Carvalho in December 2008 after almost 4 years of training. Todd coaches youth street hockey and baseball in addition to helping out with the Team Carvalho Kids program. He feels that maintaining a fun and safe training environment is the most important aspect of promoting the proper development of young athletes.

Todd Newman began his martial arts training at the age of 9 studying the art of Aikido. It was not long before he realized his affinity for the grappling arts, and joined the town wrestling team at age 10. Todd wrestled throughout elementary and high school, and became the captain of his high school wrestling team. In the years following, his athletic focus shifted primarily to strength training and fitness.
Todd is a practicing Physician Assistant in New Jersey and New York. He has a bachelor's degree in Physical Education, and a graduate degree in Exercise Physiology. He has been certified as an Exercise Specialist by the American College of Sports Medicine, has attended the Rutgers Youth Coaching Clinic and holds certifications in Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
